Canelo Alvarez Punishes Amir Khan in the 6th Round
By Francisco Romero. – Leading up the fight between Amir Khan and Saul “El Canelo” Alvarez, Kahn talked about relying on his speed and skills to face Alvarez; and speed and skills he used up until the 6th round when Canelo landed powerful right hand shot to the jaw that sent Khan to the canvass ending the fight.
Canelo received his share of punches on different combinations from Khan, but at the end of the night power overcame speed.
16,540 fans witnessed the beating at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“He is a fast fighter, and I knew things would be complicated in the beginning, but I knew they would come to my favor as the fight went on,” Álvarez said after the fight. “People have known me only for my power. I have many more qualities in the ring, and I showed that. I think people saw more of me tonight. Someone that comes in to box gives you more trouble and someone that comes right in is a little easier to fight.”
Kahn had been looking for a big payday fight for a while and Canelo gave it to him, he paid his dues and stepped up, unfortunately things didn’t go as planned for the 2004 Silver Medalist (Britain).
“I want to thank everyone for coming,” said Khan after the fight. “I think it’s time for Canelo to step up to GGG, just like I stepped up to fight him. I tried as much as I could and trained very hard for this fight. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the result I wanted.
World champion turned promoter, Oscar de la Hoya was impressed with Canelo’s shot to Khan’s jaw in the sixth round.
“That was the most devastating knockout I have seen from Canelo,” said De La Hoya, chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “I believe it was more devastating than the Kirkland knockout.”
With the victory Canelo retains his WBC Middleweight World Title and now has a record of 47-1-1 (33 KOs) and the former two-time world champion Amir “King” Khan’s record stands now at 31-4 (19 KOs).
