Beckham to retire!
The unexpected news marked the end of the Beckham era in major league soccer: The iconic player David Beckham, 38, announced his retirement at the end of this season.
The news was confirmed Thursday by England’s Football Association.
The British soccer player became one of the most famous midfielders ever, with his curling free kicks placing him in the history books and title of a major hit movie, Bend It Like Beckham.
He became one of the most easily recognized soccer stars internationally, living in London with his beautiful wife Victoria, a former Spice Girl and their four children.
He also made his name known in the high fashion world, and became a global celebrity.
During David Beckham’s storied career, he starred for Manchester United starting in 1992, Real Madrid, England’s national team (where he played in 115 matches), the U.S. squad Los Angeles Galaxy, AC Milan and is now with the French squad Paris Saint-Germain, where he will play until their last game on May 26.
With United between 1992 and 2003, Beckham won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups and the Intercontinental Cup.
Beckham will go out a winner, helping the L.A. Galaxy win two championships in his last two years here, and boosting the French team to earn a title for the first time in 19 years.
The site of the English national squad posted these comments from Beckham, on his retirement:
“I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level.
“I want to thank all my team-mates, the great managers that I had the pleasure of learning from. I also want to thank the fans who have all supported me and given me the strength to succeed.
“If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over 100 times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy.”
“I’m fortunate to have realised those dreams.”
