By Francisco Romero. – Approximately 2,970 miles from his native Quibdo, Colombia, Arizona United’s Eduar Zea is living his dream of playing professional soccer for a living.
He is currently the central defender for the Scottsdale area team.
“My journey in soccer has taken me to many different places,” Zea told us.
A journey that has him settled in Arizona, for now.
Zea signed with Arizona United Soccer Club in mid July of this year. Most recently he played for the San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League.
The 25-year-old Colombian born soccer player began his career as a member of Deportes Quindío of Colombia. He also played with America de Cali and La Equidad in his native country.
As a youth, Zea played for Colombia’s U17 squad at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup finals in South Korea.
“Zea is an experienced player who will be a tremendous asset to our organization. His style of play and work ethic align with our club perfectly,” said Arizona United Soccer Club Head Coach Michael Dellorusso through a press release when Zea was signed. “We look forward to him with being with us for the remainder of the season.”
Zea has adapted well to his new surroundings, “I feel very good, my family and I have come to like this state very much,” he told us.
The new Arizona United member brings a sense of responsibility and willingness to win to his new team, “We have a very good team, I get along with everyone, unfortunately things are not going as well as we would like to, but we are trying, we are giving it our best,” said Zea. “In soccer as in any other sport its hard for things to come out as planned, but we have a great team, great teammates,”
That responsibility, he says, came from his mother, who always instilled great pride in playing the sport of soccer, “My mother always gave me great advice, I always remember her telling my siblings and I to do our best in and out of the field.”
The willingness to win, Zea told us, comes from a very competitive family, he grew up with eight siblings very close in age and all of them playing sports against each other, “I had a very fun and competitive childhood along with my siblings, we played sports, we argued and we fought just as any other siblings would,” said the Colombian-born player.
Zea’s dream does not stop here as he would like to play at the highest level possible, for now he says he is focused on winning with Arizona United, but would like to play for a MLS (Major League Soccer) team in the near future.
“Soccer in the United States is very good and the MLS has gotten better and better with the addition of great international players in the different teams,” said Zea.
Ultimately, Zea would like to once again play for the Colombian National Team, “It would give me and my family great pride to once again wear the Colombian Jersey and represent my country, and I hope I can play for Colombia soon.”
Zea has two other brothers playing professionally, one is playing in Colombia and the other one is playing in Costa Rica.
The Journey for Zea continues as he now wears the Red and Gold with pride and determination.
