8 Found Dead In “Mobile Oven”At Walmart
by Robyn Moreno
A man from a tractor-trailer truck (which had no working AC) approached an employee at Walmart asking for water. The employee notified police who discovered the grizzly scene: 8 dead and 30 suffering from heat stroke and dehydration. 20 were taken to area hospitals and among the injured were two “school-aged children.” Two injured later died at hospitals, bringing the death toll to 10 so far.
The driver was arrested and San Antonio’s Police Chief William McManus called the tragic incident “a human-trafficking crime.” Néstor P. Rodríguez, a sociology professor at the University of Texas at Austin, told The New York Times on Sunday that the tractor-trailer used to smuggle the victims was a “mobile oven.”
“Those things are made out of steel and metal. Even if the cooling system is on in the tractor-trailer, it’s just too hot.”
San Antonio mayor Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the tragic episode “shines a bright light on the plight of immigrants looking for a better life and victims of human trafficking.”
