It was another night of Hollywood glitz and glamour at the 73rd Annual Golden Globes, hosted by Ricky Gervias in typical fashion – starting out the night with beer in hand and dishing out many well-deserved digs at some of the stars, movies, and even the Globes themselves.

The Revenant, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s beautiful (and brutal) epic about trapper Hugh Glass, who survives a bear attack to seek revenge on the men who left him for dead, won the big prize of the night – Best Picture (Drama). The movie also collected awards for Leonardo DiCaprio (Best Actor) and Iñárritu (Best Director).

“This film was about survival. It was about adaptation. It was about the triumph of the human spirit”, DiCaprio said upon accepting his award

This is another triumph for Mexican born filmmaker Iñárritu, whose Birdman took home Oscar gold for both Direction and Best Picture only last year. The Revenant’s sweep surprised many Hollywood pundits who expected the big prize of the night to go to the critically acclaimed Spotlight – an incredible film about the Boston Globe’s investigation into the Catholic church’s sex abuse scandal. However, the Globes have failed to be a reliable predictor of Oscar glory in the past decade; but these wins do not hurt The Revenant’s chances to take home gold come February 28th.

“Pain is temporary, but a film is forever, right?” Iñárritu said with a nod to Leo and the hardship they both faced during the film’s extremely difficult shoot.

The Martian was also a big winner – taking home prizes for Best Actor (Comedy) Matt Damon and Best Picture (Comedy/Musical); though many questioned the placement of the film in the Comedy category. Even Ridley Scott (the film’s director), upon accepting the award, quipped about it.

“Thank you very much. Comedy? But, anyway, I’m very grateful for that,” said Scott.

It was a big night for Latinos – and not just for Iñárritu. In the television categories, there were some amazing surprises! Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle, about classical musicians in New York, was named Best Television Comedy. It had long been considered a three-way race between Transparent (another Amazon production), Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, and HBO’s Veep. The win for Mozart was a pleasant surprise – but it didn’t end there – as Gael Garcia Bernal also won best actor in a television comedy.

“I want to dedicate this to music, to all the people that play their music, [the] common ground for communication, for justice, for happiness,” Bernal said upon accepting his award.

Guatemalan actor Oscar Isaac also won big, taking home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a limited series or motion picture for his role in the HBO movie Show Me A Hero.
