Arizona Wildcats with a Double-Dose of Victory on Saturday; Football and Basketball
By Francisco Romero
By design it was not, but the Arizona Wildcats enjoyed a (football) bowl victory and a basketball win on the same day (Saturday).
The Wildcats beat the Lobos of the University of New Mexico 45-37 in the New Mexico Bowl, while the Cats beat UNLV 82-70 at McKale Center in basketball.
With twenty varsity teams under the University of Arizona Athletic Department it is not rare for two sports to compete the same day.
What is rare is that the two major sports, basketball and football to see action on the same day, specially since football starts a few months earlier during the fall sports period.
Early on Saturday the Wildcats faced the Lobos, in New Mexico, who had home field advantage.
The Cats had six touchdown drives, all under two-minutes to secure the bowl victory.
With the win, Arizona improves to 3-1 and in its last four bowl games under Rich Rodriguez.
It marked the first time the Wildcats have ever played in four straight bowl games, while it’s also the second most bowl appearances by any UA head coach.
UA finishes the 2015 campaign at 7-6, marking the Wildcats’ fourth straight winning season. It’s Arizona’s longest such streak since recording four straight winning seasons from 1992-95.
Basketball
The Arizona Wildcats extended their consecutive winning streak at home (McKale Center) to 46 games
after beating the Runnin’ Rebels of UNLV.
Arizona’s center Dusan Ristic set a new season high finishing the game with 20 pints as the leading scorer for Sean Miller’s pupils.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 11-1 in the season; UNLV’s record stands now at 8-4.
The Wildcats will host Long Beach State next Tuesday, before starting Pac -12 play.
