When it comes to taking care of our skin, the sooner the better should be the motto. Coming from my intelligent, beautiful latina mother, (she is a connoisseur in all things skin care by the way) she always tells me that if she knew half the things we know now about skincare, she would look even better.

When you start to see changes in your skin that you’re not fond of, most of the time it is very difficult to remove. Taking charge of our skin now, will reflect later in our lives and we will be eternally grateful for making those decisions. Here some easy essential steps to do everyday:

1.) WATER

One of the easiest choices you can make to start the process of great skin is hydration. Water is your best friend, and since we live in the hot, sunny state of Arizona, it should be a given. When our body does not receive a sufficient amount of water daily, it will begin to look dry, flaky and tight. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, will relieve your body of toxins. I began to get acne at the age of 13, and to this day, water is the key secret to keeping my skin clear of it at all times. This is not an overnight step, but a commitment, once you get into the habit of constantly drinking water, you won’t want to stop and the result will be radiant, glowing skin.

2.) FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Okay, so this step might be very cliché, but it is for a reason. Many fruits and vegetables are high in Vitamins A, C and E. It helps tremendously in decreasing the risk of sun damage (Using a daily SPF is a must to, don’t forget that!), which is vital to great skin. There are many food options for Vitamin A, anything from carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and kale just to name a few are great choices. Vitamin C is essential to your regular diet, so this makes it easier to incorporate. Sources of Vitamin C can be found in oranges, papayas, strawberries, broccoli, and cauliflower. So just fresh squeeze an orange in the morning, pulp included, and it’s a great way to start the day. Vitamin E is also a big component to preventing damage. Eating food with high vitamin E, such as avocados (my favorite!), most nuts and vegetable oil are excellent in avoiding premature aging. Some studies show as well, that taking vitamin E long term, will reduce sunburns, but don’t let that go to your head, staying out of the sun if essential for fabulous skin and no wrinkles.

(Oh and FYI, dark chocolate is an antioxidant, so you can even indulge a bit!)

3.) SLEEP

This is especially difficult for me, since I am a major night owl, but this step can’t be overlooked. Sure salsa dancing the night away sounds like a great idea, but dancing all night to Elvis Crespo will show on your face, the next morning and will age you faster. Sleep is an essential factor in having a fresh face, free of blemishes and lines. Getting at least seven to eight hours a night of sleep is what the body needs to rejuvenate, and your complexion is no different. I notice when I only get five or six hours a night of sleep, my skin in the morning looks less bright, and that is something only certain creams in the morning can fix. We all have busy schedules, we are always on the move, but we must make time for rest, the body needs it, and you need it.

It is a fact that our skin is our body’s largest organ. It protects us from daily harm, so it is time to give back to it and treat it right. So drink that water, eat those fruits and veggies and get some sleep, and in turn, look and feel espectacular!
