For almost three weeks (17 days) the eyes of the sports world were focused on Sochi as the 2014 Winter Olympics took place. On Sunday, what was called the costliest Olympics ever (estimated cost at $51 billion); came to an end.
Overall the 2014 Sochi Olympics were a success. Russian President Vladimir Putin must feel great satisfaction and a great sense of accomplishment. The only thing missing from this Olympics for the Russians was the Gold Medal in Ice Hockey.
Ice Hockey aside Russia established itself again as a premier force in the Winter Olympics winning a total of 33 medals, 13 of them gold.
The United States finished with 28 medals, good for second overall. The Americans took 9 gold medals, fourth in that category and for the first time since 1936 U.S. Skaters did not win a medal in individual figure skating. The Americans also fell short of a medal in speed skating for the first time since 1984.
Norway finished third in overall medals with 26, while Canada finished fourth with 25 medals. The Canadian Hockey Team won the gold medal securing its dominance in the sport.
