11th Champions League Crown for Real Madrid; Ramos MVP
By Francisco Romero. – A heart breaker it was for Atletico de Madrid as Cristiano Ronaldo made the fifth penalty kick to give Real Madrid its eleventh Champions League Finals victory and thus leaving Atletico short of winning the European Champions League Final.
It was a hard-fought battle for 120 minutes that came down to penalty kicks; the game and overtime finished at one a piece.
In the eyes of some experts Atletico played better with plenty of opportunities that never capitalized.
At the end of the day a missed penalty kick by Altetico’s Juanfran and a fifth penalty kicked by Real Madrid’s Ronaldo gave Los Blancos the Victory.
Atletico showed grit and determination as they were down 1-0 and fought back to tie the game.
Sergio Ramos scored the first goal for Real Madrid at the fifteenth minute of play; while Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco tied the game at the 79th minute in the second half.
“I dreamt of this – I’m very positive. When the president gave me this chance, with this group of players … when you have players of this caliber, with this talent, you can achieve something big like we did tonight,” said Real Madrid’s head coach Zinedine Zidane.
Diego Simeone, Atlético’s head coach vows to continue working hard, “In the second half we could have equalized very quickly, but our intention was clear. We had the capacity to attack. Both teams had chances. We managed to get to 1-1 and then in extra time both teams were very tired. No one remembers who lost – losing two finals is a failure. We have to get over this and heal our wounds.”
Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos was named the Most Valuable Player of the Finals; he scored the first and lonely goal of regulation time and added the goal as the fourth spot kick in the shootout.
“We had a unique opportunity to make history after a tough season, with some real ups and downs, and we’ve been repaid with this title. It’s reward for the hard work and sacrifice,” said Ramos after the game.
