Don’t like your boss? You don’t have to hide it anymore.

A new study has proven that your job performance will ‘improve’ if you and your boss see eye-to-eye about your relationship — even if it’s not a great one. When you’re on the same page about how you feel about each other, employees are more apt to go above and beyond their basic job duties.

Researchers from Michigan State University found that keeping a tense relationship with your boss can negatively affect work engagement and motivation. Their results show work performance also suffers when an employee believes they have a good relationship with their boss, but their boss sees it differently — and vice versa.

Fadel Matta is the lead investigator on the study and a management researcher in MSU’s Broad College of Business. He is also a doctoral candidate in the Department of Management.

“Some people would say it’s better to fake it, but our results indicate that the opposite is true. ‘At the end of the day, it’s better for everyone to know where they stand and how they feel about each other,” he told the Daily Mail.

The findings are published in the Academy of Management Journal.
