Cox Hispanic Heritage Month Program Celebrates its 10th Year Honoring Arizona Hispanic Leaders

cox-logoPHOENIX – 2014 marks the 10-year anniversary of Cox Communications Arizona celebrating various Latino leaders in the Phoenix community. Today, Cox announced a partnership with Telemundo television, La Voz newspaper, ArizonaLatinos.com online publication and La Campesina radio to showcase these local community leaders and an outstanding Cox employee for their tireless commitment to helping various Phoenix local communities.

The Hispanic Heritage Month multi-media campaign includes a series of 30-second public service announcements highlighting outstanding Hispanic leaders and a Cox employee in Phoenix. The PSAs will rotate on Cox channels from mid-September through mid-October. With the help of Cox media partners, honorees’ stories will also appear on the pages of La Voz newspaper, online at ArizonaLatinos.com, be seen on Telemundo TV, and heard on radio spots through La Campesina radio.

Over the past 10 years, Cox has honored various Hispanic leaders that not only have demonstrated outstanding efforts to better their community but also have strengthened it. Some of the past honorees included over the 10 years have been Daniel Valenzuela, Phoenix Councilman, Patricia Garcia Duarte, President and CEO of Neighborhood Housing Services of Phoenix, Anna Tovar, State Representative for District 19, Marcelino Quiñonez, Program Coordinator, Arizona Latino Arts & Cultural Center. The various leaders honored have shown a vast array of diversity in which all aspects of the Phoenix community are being served with greatness. 

“We have had the pleasure of honoring extraordinary Latino community leaders in Arizona over the past 10 years,” said John Wolfe, senior vice president and general manager of Cox, Southwest.  “This year is no exception. Our 10th year honorees’ commitment shines bright. We hope that all the great work that these individuals do for our community inspires others to do wonderful things and we will continue to celebrate their stories for many more years to come during Hispanic Heritage Month.”

Bill Barquin

A nine-year veteran of Radio Campesina, Bill Barquin began working at Radio Campesina as an account executive and sales manager for the network’s highly successful KNAI Phoenix station for more than five years, before becoming the radio network’s chief operating officer (COO) in 2009. As the network COO, Barquin oversees management and staff coordination of programming, engineering, satellite, IT, administration activities and all local stations under the Radio Campesina Network.

Laura Gonzalez-Malerva

Laura is a postdoctoral researcher at Arizona State University’s Virginia G. Piper Center for Personalized Diagnostics. She is charge of project management that specializes in breast cancer research. Also, Laura assists the principal investigator in the development and execution of scientific proposals through out the center. She also developed a series of cells that are sensitive and resistance to drugs, which have been distributed to several labs around the world.

Javier Cardenas

Javier Cardenas, MD, is the medical director of the Barrow Concussion and Brain Injury Center at Barrow Neurological Institute. Committed to the prevention and medical care of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, Dr. Cardenas has become one of nation’s foremost leaders in concussion education, prevention and treatment. He recently created the country’s most comprehensive concussion prevention, treatment and education program at Barrow for young athletes and played an integral role in helping to write concussion legislation in Arizona. Dr. Cardenas is the only Arizona neurologist to be appointed to the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee where he advises the NFL on best practices for concussion prevention and management. In addition, Dr. Cardenas serves on various brain and spinal cord committees including the Arizona State Governor’s Advisory Council on Spinal and Head Injuries, the Sports Medical Advisory Committee of the Arizona Interscholastic Association, and the Sports Concussion Coalition of Arizona.

Gaby Cardenas- Cox Employee

Gaby is the business development consultant at Cox Media. She leads the company’s marketing and branding strategies for both the Hispanic and general markets. She served as general manager for Azteca America, a local Spanish- language televisions station before her time at Cox.
