Mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, are prevalent across the United States, but there’s one mental illness few are talking about, even though an estimated 30 million Americans are affected by it: eating disorders.

Eating disorders, are the deadliest mental illness and DO NOT discriminate, impacting both men and women of all ages, races and sexual preferences. In timing with National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (July), there’s no better time to raise awareness for the pervasive nature of eating disorders, especially in the Latina/Latino community.

Eating disorders are a mental illness and are not just about food: Research suggests that nearly 50% of individuals with an eating disorder are also abusing drugs and/or alcohol, a rate 5 times greater than what is seen in the general population.

To dispel some of the stigma on mental illnessesEating Recovery Center (ERC), a national eating disorder treatment center, has world-leading experts who can share their insight to help those affected by the mental illness.
