A brand-new survey has found that 45 percent of family doctors in the UK hand out medications to their patients even though they know these will not treat the patient’s condition.
According to the Daily Mail, almost half of these doctors admitted that they prescribed antibiotics sometimes simply to get pushy patients to leave their consultation rooms.
Also, 90 percent of doctors said they felt pressured by their patients to hand out the drug.
London-based Doctor Rosemary Leonard said it is often times hard for them to decline requests from patients, especially when children were involved. She said that many times if the parents are denied the medication, they’ll just come back the following day to see another doctor.
Seventy percent of the doctors surveyed also said they prescribed because they weren’t sure whether the patient had a viral or bacterial infection, and 24 percent said it is because there is a lack of easy-to-use diagnostic tools.
