We all love to have a sip of cola every now and then, and are especially drawn to that flashy “sugar free” label.
But new research has found that diet cola drinks do contain less sugar, but they contain higher levels of caffeine than regular versions.
According to the Daily Mail, giant companies like Coca-Cola, Pepsi and certain energy drinks like Monster Energy Drink are not required to label the levels of caffeine in their products.
So while we think we are opting for a healthier choice in drink, we don’t realize these contain more caffeine and can affect behavior for ourselves and even our children.
Tests found that Diet Coke contained 139mg of caffeine per litre, compared to 109mg in regular Coca-Cola.
This equals 46mg of caffeine in a normal-sized 330ml can of Diet Coke compared to 36mg in a can of regular Coca Cola, according to the research commissioned by the Sunday Times.
Diet Pepsi also had more caffeine, with 135mg per litre compared to 122mg in its regular product.
