There is a great amount of evolving that couples go through in their lifetime.

Whether it is a new job or a change in career, completing higher education or developing a new hobby or interest, everyone embarks on a change at one point or another which may impact romantic relationships in a positive or negative way.

Singer Justin Timberlake once said in an interview with the Daily Mail UK , “one of the most valuable things in a relationship is being able to constantly change and be individual, but look to the other side of the person that you’re with and know that they’re changing as well individually, but somehow you two can mirror each other and be the other half of that world that you both create.”

While most couples do adapt to one another and embrace each other’s life events by compromising to keep the relationship strong, there are some who shift onto two different stages in life, and ultimately the relationship gets rocky.

“The most important thing when it comes to building a long-term relationship is having good communication. Also trusting your partner is a big factor for success,” Mariela Govea, psychologist and president at Circulo Latinoamericano de Sexualidad Femenina said, “as women and Latinas, when it comes to communication, it includes expressing what we need and what we want.”

Govea also said that two common reasons why long-term couples break up is lack of intimacy and stress. “As we grow older we tend to have more responsibilities and less time for our private lives, especially when we have kids and we have little or no time at all for our intimacy because we tend to prioritize our children´s needs, and not those of the couple.”

Maintaining a strong relationship with your significant other may be a challenging journey, but with love, understanding and communication, couples may overcome life’s greatest hurdles.
