Dr. Javier Cardenas Recognized for his Efforts in Preventing Spinal Cord Injury in Children

Dr. Javier Cardenas, director of the Barrow Concussion and Brain Injury Center at Barrow Neurological Institute, is being honored by Cox Communications during Hispanic Heritage Month.

His focus derives on the commitment to care, treat and prevent traumatic brain and spinal cord injury in children.

“I am humbled and undeserving to be recognized for my work,” he said.

As a neurologist, Dr. Cardenas specializes in concussion and other forms of traumatic brain injury. He deals with all aspects of the brain and nervous system, and his job consists of treating patients for their injuries, including headaches, dizziness, sleep problems and seizures.

“I also provide sideline coverage for the NFL and ASU, where I identify concussions in football and also in soccer. More importantly, I work to prevent injuries by teaching athletes about the signs and symptoms of concussion before they get injured.”

Thus far, his message has been received by more than 250,000 Arizona high school athletes.

Dr. Javier Cardenas’ background in special education and long history of volunteerism has guided his career, leading him to the field of child neurology. He graduated from Arizona State University with highest honors and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.

As a special education teacher, he instructed children with traumatic brain injury and developmental disabilities.

“I am most grateful that Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center supports my community efforts,” he said. “I am most proud of our program, Barrow Brainbook, which is the most successful concussion education program in the nation.”

With the help of Chicanos por la Causa, the institute has been able to translate the Barrow Brainbook to Spanish.

For the past 15 years, he has volunteered for Special Olympics in Arizona. Governor Janet Napolitano appointed Dr. Cardenas to her Advisory Council on Spinal and Head Injuries, which provides services and support for individuals with spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries.

The Barrow Neurological Institute will take advantage of the national stage the upcoming Super Bowl 49 will bring to Phoenix. Their Barrow Brainbook and video game “Barrow Brainball” will be featured to educate visitors on the controversial topic of concussions among players in the rough, highly physical sport.

2014 marks the 10-year anniversary of Cox Communications celebration for various Latino leaders in the Phoenix community.

The Hispanic Heritage Month multi-media campaign includes a series of 30-second public service announcements highlighting outstanding Hispanic leaders and a Cox employee in Phoenix. The PSAs will rotate on Cox channels from mid-September through mid-October.
