5 Tips to Protect Yourself and your Family from Mosquito Bites
With the increasing concern of mosquito-borne illness during the summer months, now more than ever people are looking for ways to protect themselves from bites and the potential of illnesses associated with mosquitoes.
Zika has now been found in the U.S.; Puerto Rico and states with subtropical zones such as Texas and Florida are at a heightened risk. In fact, Zika was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.
So How Can We Protect Ourselves?
- Repellent sprays need to be reapplied frequently to maintain effectiveness, and be cautious when using aerosols as they can easily be sprayed in the eyes. Use potentially harmful chemicals, such as DEET, sparingly to negate side effects.
- Choose repellent options that are EPA approved such Thermacell Repellent Products that create a 15ft x 15ft zone of protection.
- Bath oil, such as Avon’s Skin So Soft, does offer some protection from mosquitoes, but is effective for less than 30 minutes.
- Don’t eat bananas during mosquito season as sugar-loving, female mosquitoes love banana oil.
- Wear protective clothing at dusk and twilight hours; long pants and long sleeves will minimize skin exposure, and light colors are best. Always have appropriate clothing in the car.
