Northern Perks Doughnuts & Coffee Shop Opens in Central Phoenix

It’s easy to find a doughnut shop in Phoenix where customers can drop by for a single or a dozen unique doughnuts any day of the week. However, what isn’t common is being sold out of everything by 8 a.m, not just once, but twice before hitting your two-month in business mark.

For Northern Perks Doughnuts & Coffee (located near Central Phoenix), sugar lovers that stop by to see what the bakery is all about have realized their doughnuts are unlike any other. There are many different types of doughnuts; from the traditional glazed and chocolate sprinkled doughnuts, to kid friendly treats like the gold fish doughnut and fruit loop doughnut. There is literally something for everyone to enjoy.

The café is managed by four restaurateurs; but it’s an entire family effort, with some of the doughnut  creations inspired by the kids.

“They were in the process of helping to bake and creating different toppings as well,” said owner Santia Sieng, who is of Cambodian heritage.

When one thinks of Cambodia, doughnuts may not be the first thing one thinks of, but it’s actually quite common in the culture to make.

“I’m not sure why it’s popular,” she said. “It’s not a craft or skill that is picked up Cambodia. Here, I think, it’s just learned and passed on.”

And for this bakery, it’s the family recipes that have been passed down for generations that makes them stand out. But there is one more element that makes them unique, and the secret lies in the mixture of the flour.

While there are many unique doughnuts to choose from, the cronut is a must try. It’s a croissant style doughnut that is fried and filled with vanilla, Nutella, and topped with fresh fruit.

Whether you choose a cake doughnut or a margarita doughnut, you really can’t go wrong! There’s something under that glass case to satisfy all sugar cravings. If you’re lucky, you may drop by as a new item is featured. After all, as any new business in the Valley, it’s always evolving!
