If you’re a fan of Macayo’s – or tacos and guacamole – there’s a flavorful spot in the Valley that’s worth every buck; and though they’re as different as night and day, there is one similarity – and it’s with the owner. Reed Johnson is a man of many talents. He creates new recipes and combines ingredients to invent an entirely new experience. He is always seeking new recipes. And coming from the family who began Macayo’s, the drive to be a restaurateur runs in his blood.
“We worked for eight months on recipes from my parents kitchen and tasted and tasted tons of food,” said Johnson.
Shortly after months of tasting and inventing new recipes, Milagro Grill emerged. Milagro, which means miracle in Spanish, serves a mixture of Mexican-American cuisine with a South American influence.
The guacamole “Make it Unico” has crab sprinkled on top and is one of the favorites.
“It’s a sweet and savory crab mixture. We add blistered chili so that it gives a little smoky taste,” he said.
Customers who aren’t seafood eaters are not out of luck. You can order the guacamole without the crab and experience the same delicious flavors.
But Milagro Grill’s real claim to fame can be found in their award winning short rib tacos. Pasilla BBQ, peanuts, and pickled chilies are just few of the ingredients that brought attention to the scrumptious meal. Milagro Grill definitely knew what they were bringing to the table next with the sweet butternut squash taco and the pork belly taco.
“We didn’t want to do what others have done, so we kept doing things our way,” he explained.
Their passion for gourmet cuisine is reflected in a number of awards and accolades from across the Valley. The tacos are such a popular item on the menu that there is an event every year at their eatery called “Winner, Winner – Taco Dinner”. This November 20th, customers can have the chance to taste their award winning tacos from the AZ Taco Festival – paired with their favorite wine and margarita selections. Be sure to call for reservations!
And whether or not you’re a fan of dessert, the concha frito will really give you a run for your money. This unique dish is made with Mexican concha bread pudding and resembles French toast, with the addition of cinnamon salted caramel and espresso ice cream. Talk about heaven on earth!
The neighborhood hangout is making a name not only for their tacos and guacamole, but also their out-of-the-box recipes. From the camarones dulce to their spicy chocolate cake, it’s a milagro they’re located in the heart of Phoenix!
