Addressing the digital divide has been on many people’s minds for quite sometime and the importance to be tech savvy is becoming more and more prevalent. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 30% of all Americans – approximately 100 million people – risk becoming increasingly isolated from contemporary life because they lack the Internet service and the skills necessary to use it effectively. The Cox Technology Center at Friendly has had the ability to transmit real-time classes and workshops for up to 500 people at a time, which has included both the students participating in person and at home. Since the grand opening of the Cox Technology center located inside of Friendly House, it has since seen tremendous success amongst the many students that have passed through the doors of the center.
In particular, many of Friendly Houses’ adult ESL students have given tremendous thanks to the Cox Technology Center due to their ability to learn the basic computer literacy skills that are needed to be successful in today’s job field. When many students start classes at Friendly House they do not even know how to turn on the computer. Many of the students have learned so much in the small amount time at the Cox Technology Center from the basic operations of the computer to more advanced skills like completing all their homework using a word document. The students mentioned that the ability to maneuver the Internet has helped them make the basic day-to-day responsibilities like paying the utility bills much easier with the skills they have learned at the Cox Technology Center. Overall, the students hope that there is more of these technology centers and programs that are accessible to the public so they to can learn the skills to be success in the ever changing world of technology.
