The San Marina Learning Center, created almost a year ago by Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc. (CPLC) to help keep children off the streets and encourage them to keep up with their school work, will now be named Cox Technology Center.
Cox Communications joined forces with CPLC to create additional opportunities for youth to have access to state-of-the art technology and ensure everyone has a solid education and a safe learning environment.
The Center is equipped with a computer lab, a classroom, a small multi-purpose area, and a kitchen. Residents between 4 – 18 years of age are eligible to enroll and receive year-round homework assistance, including individualized subject-specific tutoring for free!
According to the Phoenix Police Department, calls for service to law enforcement were reduced by 85 percent since the learning center was built, and residents of West Phoenix are proud to call San Marina their home.
In addition to the Cox Technology Center, more than 125 volunteers from Cox Communications, CarMax, CPLC, organizers from KaBOOM! – a national non-profit that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America –, and Phoenix residents will provide these children with the childhood they deserve by building a new playground in San Marina.
The design is based on children’s drawings created at a special design event in January. CPLC with their partners are supporting healthy minds and active bodies for families at the San Marina Apartments. The grand opening of this playground will take place during the official re-naming of the Center.
