Two Thousand and Fourteen has been an incredible year – both personally and professionally.  Risas Dental and Braces has grown from a young toddler in to a fast-paced and sometimes hard-to-control adolescent.

As 2015 peaks its head around the corner looking at me with its hands in the air wondering what´s in store, I can´t help but ponder on the idea of growth and how it is that I´m going to be able to maintain the authenticity and raw nature of our business.  You know, the seemingly inevitable nature that as things get bigger, they become harder to control, maneuver and change.

It has always been my goal that Risas continue to evolve and change with the times.  I want to change 5-10% each year by adding new technology, new dental advancements, new systems, new ways to do things better and for less money so that patients can continue to benefit from our research and development and so that we can re-invent ourselves every decade because let´s be honest, that´s the rate that things change these days.

I am committed to this change because even if it costs more, its in the best interest of our patients who put their trust in us to not only save them money, but provide them with better and more predictable, long-lasting treatment every year.

While all of this commitment to change exists, the one area that I refuse to budge on and change is our company culture.  In the end, this is why I started Risas.  I wanted to build a network of people who care about a mission that is bigger than just one purpose.

As a founder of a company, early on, you control everything.  However, as things grow, your ability to influence is lessened if you do not have the right people on the bus with you.  If there´s one thing I would like to be known for it´s that I am able to identify the greatness in people and convince them to believe in my mission.

Nothing in life is more important than other people.  Risas is the best because we work with the best.

Our company culture can be summed up by what we say internally as we refer to one another.  ¨Risas Dental and Braces is the best 2nd family in the world.¨

We spend more time at work with our 2nd family than we do at home with our own families.  It´s just the nature of the beast!  So, if this is the case, then we should make sure that the family we get involved with has the morals, principles and ethics that we value ourselves.

This week, Risas Dental and Braces will be recognized with our 5th award of 2014.  We will be crowned as one of the ¨Best Places to Work.¨

I can tell you that nothing speaks more about a company´s culture than when you win an award that is voted on by your own employees who take a completely anonymous survey to rank how they feel about the company they represent.

Risas is a health company.  Not only that, but we are a dental company which means we sell a product that usually hurts and costs a lot of money.  We are not a fancy and fun up and coming technology company that has zero interaction with the public.

Nope, we face the public daily and, though we strive for perfection always, we fall short at times and people get upset.  Our teammates are the ones that get to face this wrath that is, at times, overwhelming.  Yet, we still scored high enough to be considered a winner of the award!

I love my 2nd family.  It has brought me more joy this year than I could imagine.  It is awesome to watch members of our Risas Family move on to greater pastures as they enter dental school or another vocation to improve and develop as people.

We encourage our people to be about MORE than just dentistry.  Our 3-day full-time workweek allows our doctors and teammates the ability to be about something outside of work – family, church, school, personal development, travel and relaxation.  I believe this helps them perform their best at work.

There´s nothing more rewarding than receiving a text from a doctor or teammate that expresses appreciation for the ability to take their child to the doctor on Wednesday because they have the day off.  Or, meeting a new team member for the first time and having them gush with pride and excitement over the chance to join the Risas family and live life differently.  This is the stuff I live for.

Work hard, Rest hard.  I never bought in to the 9-5 concept in life.  It seems like such a waste to spend the meat of your life doing something for money.  We don’t believe in living life the same way.

This is another example of our willingness to be different and to change the way things are done.  I´m glad the Phoenix Business Journal recognized this in us and will proudly hold the award high with pride when it´s given this month.

In the meantime, keep your chin up… And, if you´re a winner and want to experience life differently, we are always looking for great people to join our family.
