I was recently watching a special on one of boxing’s greatest fighters, Manny Pacquiao.  This Filipino, known by many as Pac-Man, has won several division world championships and is debated as one of the best fighters ever.

One of the segments in this special focused on Pac-Man’s uncanny ability to create angles when fighting different opponents.  The best boxers are those who are best able to create the most favorable angles that allow them to throw punches that land with force.  All fighters are able to throw a punch and land one, but the greats have the innate ability to lure their opponent in to a favorable angle that allows the punch to be harder, faster and more accurate.

I believe that there are universal principles that make the Greats stand out in business, sports, school, music, movies and any other talent out there.  The greats are able to look at something that everyone else looks at, but at different angles.

Like Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao, Steve Jobs was able to look at the world of technology and design in a way that no one else could possibly match.  Mr. Jobs simply saw things at a different angle – he didn’t allow the world to box him in to think one way or another.  His mind, like Pacquiao’s, was able to see things that the average Joe, looking at the exact thing, could not see.

Now, I do not wish to put myself even close to the same levels as these greats, but in Risas, much of our success is a result of looking at the same thing dentists have looked at for years and simply doing it completely different.  I have been blessed in life to have a knack for seeing a different angle on most things, which enables Risas to be on the cutting edge of doing what patients want and need from their dentist.

In my family, Black Friday has always been a big deal.  Everyone likes to get up at the crack of dawn and get to their favorite store, wait in line for hours, sometimes get in to a fight and then finally make it to the prize possession for purchase.

Well, Risas Dental and Braces had just opened and in November 2011 Black Friday was just around the corner.  While I was showering (all my epiphanies come in the pool or shower because I don’t have my phone distracting me!), I had the thought, “Why do we leave it to the electronics and toy companies to take up all the Black Friday hype?”

Even though this thought came to me just 8 days before Black Friday, we quickly put together what would become the 1st Annual Risas Black Friday event.

We weren’t able to get much marketing material made, but we sent out our people to pass the word on to the communities.  In the end, we had mediocre success.  The concept was great, the timing wasn’t and the execution needed a lot of help!  After all, how does a healthcare company create the kind of hype that the Walmarts of the world create by offering a Samsung TV at half price?

I was determined to make it a success and I knew we could do better.

Fast-forward one year.  We were prepared this time.  Since braces are the hottest “want” item in our offices, we offered braces to people at a price that no one in the world could beat, not even dentists on the border – $2000 all-inclusive braces.  Let’s just say that our doors were beat down by the masses that wanted to take advantage of this amazing deal.  The hype was created and instead of running to Walmart, people were running to our offices.

Black Friday this year will be even better with more items at even better discounts.  Not just braces this time.  We will have fun dental products that will be offered at a cost below our own.  I imagine that our offices will have a line out the door of 50 people.  It’s fun.

Why do we do this?  It’s easy – It’s the right thing to do.  I don’t believe that dentistry should be so overpriced that we ignore it in place of buying a big TV.  I always tell people that one of the great things about Risas is that we don’t make you choose between a big procedure or a big Christmas for your family.  Nope, I want you to have and do both at the same time – get your treatment done at an affordable rate with payment plans AND go enjoy your family and give them what they deserve.  I realize that this isn’t possible outside of Risas Dental and Braces and I’m sorry for that.

I am so grateful for Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Peyton Manning and other greats in this world that show us that you can stand out among the masses.  Each of those was born with the same agency to succeed in life and they did.  They show us that there is a great potential in each of us as long as we are willing to look at things from a new angle, new perspective and new attitude.

Try viewing things through new eyes.  Create new angles for the problems in your life and you’ll find new solutions.  Dare to be different.  Don’t listen when they say it can’t work.  Prove them wrong.  Let it fuel your fire.

Risas Black Friday event was laughed at by many, but I have learned that when the masses laugh at something I think of, I need to push harder to do what I feel.

Don’t miss out! Black Friday November 28!  Mention this article for a special gift from Dr. Nicolas.  Until next week… Keep that chin up!
