f68bc1606a499c66a1eabd66e99d6817_LBurton Barr Central Library will exhibit a collection of artwork created by artist Jenita Landrum, titled “Birthing the Next Generation II: Many Colors of Motherhood,” Nov. 7, 2014 ¬– Jan. 9, 2015 at the library’s @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave.  An opening reception with the artist will be held 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7.  Singer Tina Estes will perform a mix of indie, world and fusion music.  The reception is sponsored by the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library.

Landrum’s art is influenced by issues that affect gender, race, class and self-identity.  Her work challenges the viewer through images that reflect the realities of invisibleness, beauty, racism and cultural norms.  In this exhibit, she focuses on the voice of women who have birthed/hatched the next generation.  She uses watercolor and transferred text to illustrate how each woman sees her inner self.  She also uses a mixed media installation to explore the birthing process using birds as a metaphor.

Landrum’s work has been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions in places such as Columbus, OH; Washington, D.C.; Dallas, TX; Ghana, Africa and more.  She has received several awards including an Individual Artists Fellowships in Dresden, Germany, and the 2nd Place Curators Choice award from Ace Gallery in Columbus, OH. Landrum received a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio State University.

Phoenix Public Library is a system of 16 branch libraries and the Burton Barr Central Library.  For more information, call 602-262-4636 or visit the Phoenix Public Library website.
