Desert Stages Theatre Presents ‘Driving Miss Daisy’
Desert Stages Theatre presents Driving Miss Daisy, the Pulitzer Prize winning production that has captured the hearts of theatre patrons for years.
Under the direction of Mark-Alan C. Clemente, this powerful production takes the intimate Desert Stages Theatre Actor’s Café stage Fri., Nov. 1, 2013 – Sun., Jan. 12, 2014.
Set in Atlanta, the emotional and sometimes gritty story spans a quarter of a century and centers on two characters, Jewish widow Miss Daisy and her African American chauffer-turned-friend Hoke. Addressing poignant issues in the Jewish and African American communities, Daisy and Hoke’s friendship blossoms between 1948 and 1973 unveiling a rapidly changing social climate during this tumultuous span of time in American history.
Driving Miss Daisy premiered off-Broadway in 1987, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1988 and several Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Off-Broadway Play, Best Actress in a Play and Best Director that same year. The play was adapted to its film version in 1989 starring Jessica Tandy, Morgan Freeman and Dan Aykroyd, which was awarded the Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay in 1990. In 2010, Driving Miss Daisy premiered on Broadway and gained rave reviews and box office success for its 180 performances.
