(Phoenix, AZ) — The premise: The Hernandez family from Altar, Sonora, while listening to their favorite podcast, learns that Donald J. Trump is running for president and groping people along the way. So, they decide to walk to Phoenix to register to vote in time for the November 8 election. Not for any partisan reason. They just don’t want to spend the next four years getting groped.

Fortunately, the Hernandez family matriarchs, Bata and Gila, got amnesty under Reagan, which means everyone is a U.S. citizen.

Unfortunately, Bata and Gila were purged long ago from the Maricopa County Permanent Early Voting List. (I guess “permanent” doesn’t always mean permanent anymore.)

Fortunately, El Curandero Bartolo de Los Angeles Quintana Wong Smith Ducey! (whose magic powers have nothing to do with medical marijuana or the Grateful Dead) happens along to help ‘guide’ them safely across the border and to the outskirts of Phoenix, where they catch the light rail to Helen Purcell’s office.

Along the way, the family encounters all manner of strange and exotic beings (and we don’t mean that in a racial way): Melania Trump, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, Ann Kirkpatrick, Sarah Palin, Jan Brewer, Chewbaca (really), Vanessa Ruiz, Lester Holt… You get the picture.

“The play tries to be brainy political satire—whatever that is—but it’s also just goofy enough for the entire family to enjoy,” said James E. Garcia, who is the playwright and the producing artistic director of New Carpa Theater Company.  (Full disclosure: Garcia also wrote this press release, which is awkward because that means he’s basically quoting himself to you. He also used this same quote last year, but no one printed it.) Alex Sanchez Vega directed the show.

The run of the play will feature cameo appearances by Mary Rose Wilcox, Lydia Guzman, David Garcia, Danny Ortega, Mary Rabago, and any other suckers, er, upright community leaders, we can reel in.

Tickets are $20 general admission and $15 for groups of 10 or more and students. General admission tickets are available at www.newcarpa.org. To reserve discounted tickets, call 623-252-2772, or buy them at the door.

Note: This play is performed in English with a smattering of Spanglish along the way. We know that won’t make the Trump happy, but that makes us happy. People of any political persuasion, gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation are welcome to attend, as long as you promise not to beat anyone up who disagrees you.  This is a play, not a UFC match.

And don’t forget to vote on November 8. Voting is good.
