DATOS: Arizona Latinos Spend Over $43 Billion a Year
Nearly two-thirds of Hispanic business owners plan to expand, the state’s Hispanic consumers buy more than $43 billion a year in goods and services, and there are more than 67,000 Latino-owned small businesses in Arizona. Those are a few of the facts you’ll find in this year’s DATOS: The State of Arizona’s Hispanic Market, published by the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and scheduled for release at a breakfast conference at the Downtown Phoenix Convention Center Sept. 24. “Virtually no corner of the world was left unscathed by the crushing impact of the global economic recession, but this year’s DATOS report shows Arizona and its growing Latino community are bouncing back strong,” said Gonzalo A. de la Melena, Jr., president and CEO of the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Our state is reestablishing its reputation as an ‘opportunity oasis’ for newcomers from across the country and around the globe. The Hispanic Chamber is proud to have helped lead Arizona in a new direction in the face of our state’s challenges around the economy and immigration and toward an era we believe will bring greater opportunities for Latinos and non-Latinos across the state.” The DATOS event is one of the state’s largest annual gatherings of business and community leaders. About 1,000 people are expected to attend. De la Melena said this year’s DATOS report also includes the results of the Hispanic Business Enterprise Report, a detailed survey of Hispanic-owned small businesses in the state. The survey is part of a series of reports released by the Arizona Hispanic Chamber during the past year highlighting the state’s minority-, women- and Hispanic-owned small businesses. In November, a report about the state of family-owned businesses will be released. The presenting sponsor for this year’s DATOS event is SRP. This year’s keynote speakers are Monica Gil, Senior Vice President, Nielsen Global Information & Measurement, who will deliver a talk on “Why Latinos Matter,” and Luis Garcia, President & Partner, Marketvision, author of “Culture, The Way into Hearts and Carts.” ASU Professor Emeritus Dr. Loui Olivas will present this year’s DATOS findings. Immediately after the DATOS breakfast, Verizon Wireless will present a breakout session titled “Technology for Business” featuring Michele Ruiz, writer of “My Life as a Latina Entrepreneur.”
