Two years ago, a family tragedy prompted Martha and Diana Reyes to form a foundation to help burn victims recover from their horrible trauma. The Reyes Foundation for Burn Victims’ mission is to give patients who have suffered severe burns an opportunity to continue with their lives normally with physical and emotional healing.

On Friday, Sept. 6, 8 p.m. at the Mesa Arts Center, internationally known Dr. Cesar Lozano will appear in Mesa to give a presentation in Spanish, with a portion of the night’s proceeds going to the Reyes Foundation for Burn Victims.

Martha, a doctor, and her niece Diana explained that the foundation was created in January 2011, almost three years after Maria Juliana, their teenage niece in Bogota, Colombia, was severely burned over 22 percent of her body during a school torch ceremony.

“We couldn’t give Maria Juliana donations from the Foundation we founded, because giving family members donations was against the law,” Martha told ArizonaLatinos.com. “So we decided to give the funds we raised to other burn victims here and in Colombia.”

Two children that the Foundation has provided over $1,500 to buy burn compression garments include 4-year-old Dana Mojica Arias, who burned her legs, and 8-year-old Lider Tamojo, an orphan boy in Bogota. Lider suffered burns from his neck down and spent three months in the hospital.  Both required multiple surgeries.  They are hoping that the community will support the Foundation’s good works by either attending the big fundraising event on Sept. 6 or by donating at their website, http://www.reyesfoundationforburnvictims.org/

“It’s very hard to get donations and difficult to raise money,” says Diana. “We make sure our foundation work is always transparent so people will donate. Even five dollars goes a long way, but we are hoping to bet bigger and more donations to help more kids.”
