“We have received an incredible amount of support from our Spanish-speaking fan base over the years,” says Suns President Jason Rowley in a story in the Phoenix Business Journal. “The new website offers our loyal fans a new channel and a new way to follow the team, in addition to providing our marketing partners a platform to connect with the Hispanic community here in the Valley.”
The new Spanish website is part of the Sun’s ongoing efforts to market to the Latino community. Since the 2007 season, the Suns have joined six other NBA teams in honoring the National Basketball Association’s Latino players and fans by staging an annual Noche Latina program. The Phoenix team wears special jerseys with “Los Suns” showing proudly. These games are broadcast on national and cable TV networks.
These commemorative games celebrate the growing support of Suns fans from the Arizona Hispanic community with in-arena, Hispanic-oriented festivities.
About 16 percent of the NBA’s total fan base is Hispanic. Six U.S.-born Latino players and 19 players from Spain and Latin America are on the pro league’s 2012-13 rosters. The NBA has played 27 preseason games and one regular-season game in Latin America.
