“The school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior High School that resulted in the death of 17 innocent people has left the Parkland community mourning and forever changed.
Fourteen students, the school’s athletic director, a coach and a geography teacher were killed at the school on Valentine’s Day by a gunman, Nikolas Cruz.
This past weekend, Martin Duque, was the last victim of the tragic incident who was laid to rest. Duque was a member of the school’s junior ROTC. The 14-year-old along with two other victims, Peter Wang and Alaina Petty, were honored by the Army for their acts of heroism.
Friends and family who attended the private ceremony in Pompano Beach remembered the teen as a kind and loving person who was ‘always smiling’ and had a knack for making friends. One student, Jose Hoyos, told the Miami Herald, as he struggled to fit in, Duque who was also a native of Mexico, made him feel welcome. “He quickly became one of my greatest friends – no question,” he said.
Duque and his siblings were raised by their two grandmothers in Mexico while his parents worked in Florida to save enough money to have the whole family reunited in Parkland. You can contribute to their Go Fund Me here.”
