Latino Artists Dominate Grammy Stage

Ashley Jimenez of Latina.com describes how the 2018 Grammy Awards Show is being dominated by Latino performers –

“Mark your calendars everyone! Latino celebrities are taking over the stage this year at the Grammys which include performances from Cardi B, Bruno Mars, Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and more.

On Wednesday, the Grammys list announced the list of artists and Latino were found everywhere. Looks like music’s biggest night will have some extra flavor this year with tunes like Cardi’s Bodak Yellow, Fonsi summer hit Despacito, along with the funky R&B vibes of 24K Magic. 

This is a major win for the Hispanic community as it proves inclusivity among all media platforms could produce impacting results. With the tropical sounds of Despacito breaking streaming records on Youtube and the Bronx hip-hop influence of Bodak Yellow — Latinos owned music last year.

This outstanding list featuring Latin artists is extremely rare since The Recording Academy created the Latin Grammy Awards in 2000. The live broadcast award show honors work produced anywhere around the world that is recorded in either Spanish or Portuguese and is awarded in the United States. The Latin Grammys is known for being selective around the English songs they recognize, which is why some are not too familiar with it in the United States.

The last time a performance list showcased a large number of Hispanic artists was back in the early 2000s. During the 2005 Grammys, nine Latin artists graced the stage which included a Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony duo along with Fergie, Los Lonely Boys, and more.

Not only have Latin artists being recognized on the stage, records such as Despacito are being nominated for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The Puerto Rican- Jew megastar, Bruno is being nominated for Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best R&B Album. Along with the breakout superstar, Cardi with earning a nomination for Best Rap Performance.
