Miguel’s New Music Video ‘Now’

Miguel’s new music video for his song, “Now”, from his new album, War and Leisure, brings to light the reality of detention centers essentially functioning as prisons.

The video is set near the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, California, one of the largest for-profit detention centers in state. The video depicts scenes from the #SchoolsNotPrisons Adelanto concert that Miguel headlined back on October 20th, which was presented by Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC).

Throughout the video you hear voices from activists detailing their experience. One of them, Sylvester Owino, points out to say, “How can somebody be kept for nine years and four months? That’s not detention. So if anybody tells you, ‘This is a detention,’ No, it’s not. They’re prisons.”

In the video Miguel himself speaks in front of a crowd of people and says, “I see innocent people being ripped from their way of life, to essentially be incarcerated and used as cheap labor, is really crazy, man.”

In his first verse he seems to speaking out to Trump and his political polarization to divide Mexico even further from the U.S. by building a wall at the border.

CEO of the free world now
Build your walls up high and wide
Make it rain to keep them out
That won’t change what we are inside

Miguel ends his song by saying, “It’s the time now to really speak out and not only speak out but to do something about what we believe if we want to see the change.
