Lin-Manuel Miranda Coaching A Rapping Gina Rodriguez Is Everything
Lin-Manuel Miranda Coaching A Rapping Gina Rodriguez Is Everything
“I really haven’t done this in forever.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda recently tweeted a video that proves Gina Rodriguez has got some bars.
Rodriguez was one of the 25 artists recruited by the “Hamilton” creator to appear on his charity song “Almost Like Praying,” which would benefit relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
She reached deep into her Filly Brown days and came out strong, rapping the names of a few Puerto Rican towns to the beat.(Filly Brown is a character Rodriguez played in 2012 of an aspiring rapper). And Miranda was there to give her the coaching she needed to get a solid take.
“I love that,” he tells her after her first take. “Now start at the intensity you finished at, and go even higher.”
If only we could all be so lucky to get a wingman like Miranda, tbh.
But before all of the rapping began, the two had to take a Puerto Rican pride selfie with Rita Moreno, who, frankly, seemed ready to get on with it all.
While in the studio, the two acted like a couple of old friends hanging out. They make fun faces at each other and hype each other up. Manuel even reminds Rodriguez of the first time they met, which was on the corner of 214th and Broadway in New York.
Both Rodriguez and Miranda have been using their star power to raise money for Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria devastated the Caribbean island in late September. Earlier this month, Rodriguez went on “The Ellen Show” and danced salsa to raise money for Puerto Rico relief and breast cancer research. The “Jane the Virgin” star was able to raise $10,000 for each cause.
Miranda hasn’t stopped raising funds for Puerto Rico. He partnered with Spotify to create a curated playlist and got the company to pledge a donation for Puerto Rico based on the number of followers the playlist received. He raised $2.5 million in 24 hours thanks to one impassioned email sent through MoveOn. Miranda also participated in Stephen Colbert’s and Nick Kroll’s #PuberMe Challenge, which raised $1 million for Puerto Rico.
