The Puerto Rican singers, who are the masterminds behind the biggest song of the summer, “Despacito,” just broke music records. Aside from taking the summer by storm, the track has officially become the most streamed song in music history. With 4.6 billion streams across music streaming platforms, the original hit, along with its remix which features Justin Bieber, have dethroned the Canadian singer’s ‘Sorry’.
Back in May, the unignorable song also became the first song to reach number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 since Los Del Rio’s “Macarena,” in 1996.
Of course, with the song’s success also came some controversy. Selena Gomez‘s ex, who joined forces with the Puerto Rican heartthrobs to show off his Spanish skill for the first time, was highly criticized after a video of himself mocking the ‘Despacito’ lyrics at a mini concert went viral. Bieber, who seemed to have forgotten the lyrics, was caught singing “blah, blah, blah” instead of the Spanish chorus. However, Fonsi had previously praised the 23-year-old songwriter for learning how to properly pronounce difficult words from the song.
Aside from celebrating the success of his latest collaboration, Daddy Yankee is celebrating his own record breaking achievements. The reggaeton singer generated over 44,735,586 monthly listeners on Spotify making him the first Latin artist to reach No. 1 on the music platform.
