The narco saga Queen of the South, (based on a true story) premieres Thursday night at 9 p.m. on USA network. Starring Alice Braga (I Am Legend), the series tells the powerful story of Teresa Mendoza (Braga), a Mexican woman forced to seek refuge in America after her drug-dealing husband is taken out. In the process, she teams up with an unlikely figure from her past to bring down the leader of the very drug trafficking ring that has her on the run.
The crime drama is based on a hit Mexican telenovela, and its first season garnered respectable ratings and reviews—it may not quite reach the high standards set by much of the current glut of “prestige TV,” but its juicy novela soapiness can actually be pretty refreshing. The 13-episode first season is now on Netflix, if you’re looking to catch up.
