Blanca Mondragón on Building “Amazing Flowers,” Launching “I Said Yes!” Magazine
By: Cindy G. Castillo
“I am in the business of making people happy.” That’s the business motto that Blanca Mondragón has adopted, which has led to her success as a Latina entrepreneur in the Valley of the Sun.
Mondragón is the founder of Amazing Flowers, a business that offers floral arrangements and event planning services. With more than a decade of experience under her belt, she has become one of the most recognized florists in the state.
Originally from Morelia, Michoacán, Blanca has always been surrounded by a family of entrepreneurs. In her uncle’s flower shop for instance, she found her love for customer service and keeping clients happy. It was in her father’s business, however, that she was taught the art of floral design.
Her very first flower shop opened in Tempe in 2007. “I didn’t know anything about flowers, but I had the love and the passion for it.” Looking back at how far she’s come, Blanca says she feels most grateful for always being able to work on her own account, and the freedom that being your own boss brings.
“It’s just being able to spend time with your family whenever you like,” she explains, “for example yesterday, I have like 500 emails to answer, but I took advantage of my son’s fall break to spend an entire day at the Arizona State Fair with my family.”
As an independent and determined entrepreneur, Mondragón is taking the next steps in her new venture as now publisher for “I Said Yes! Magazine.” The magazine isn’t meant to be a catalog of local services, but more of a tool for future brides to use when it comes to wedding planning. It is available both digitally and printed, and runs twice a year.
“The main idea is to educate. I’m very fortunate to have gathered a team that’s very professional in their respective realms, and that are writing for the magazine,” she said. “My work [in this project] is to bring you the information so that when you come to me [for wedding planning], you know what you want and understand why we recommend certain things.”
She said the idea for the magazine was born of her own need to help future brides. Looking to the future, Blanca isn’t stopping any time soon and is already taking the project to international audiences. When asked, “how do you do it?” – she says she strongly believes in the power of a community that works together, along with allies.
“If you run alone many you’ll get there faster, but if you run in a group, you’ll go farther,” she said. “Every person you meet in life is there for a reason. Maybe you don’t see it now, but you will in the future.”
