Will Canelo Alvarez fight Triple-G anytime Soon?
By Francisco Romero. – Boxing fans across the world salivate at the idea of a Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – Gennady Golovkin (GGG) fight; that idea faded away as soon as Alvarez vacated the middleweight WBC Title in May after fighting Amir Khan.
That moved immediately awarded the title by the WBC who officially recognized Golovkin as their middleweight champion.
Golden Boy promotions has stated that they will still pursue a fight against GGG, but did not want to be forced to a deadline in order to come to an agreement.
Therefore, the question is still up in the air; will Canelo fight Triple-G anytime soon?
That answer will not be known for a while; what we now know is that Alvarez is getting ready to fight British Liam Smith.
Canelo has gone down in weight to 154 lbs. to fight the WBO World Champion.
Smith record stands at 23-0-1; 13 KO’s, while Canelo’s record is at 47-1-1; 33 KO’s.
Canelo Alvarez is looking forward to facing the British fighter, “Liam Smith is a tremendous fighter with real knock out power, and the current WBO Super-Welterweight World Title Owner,” said Alvarez. “I have no doubt that this fight will give and take, which will fill the expectations of the fans, and I will work with enthusiasm I have always worked with to get the upper hand on September 17.”
Smith will not be an easy task for Canelo; he became the first World Champion in 22 years when he beat American John Thompson last October.
“This fight will allow me to make a name for myself in the United States and show the Americans and Mexicans just how good I am. As soon as I become world champion my next goal was to make my name across the Atlantic and this is the big stage that will allow me to do so.”
The Canelo – GGG fight will have to wait for a while.
