Phoenix Introduces Summer of Tech With Free Computer Science and Coding Classes

Councilman Daniel Valenzuela is excited to bring a new program to West Phoenix at Palo Verde Library and Maryvale Community Center that offers free coding and computer science classes to kids ages 8 through 12.

“STEM education curriculum, including computer science and coding, is about equipping our children with the tools needed to compete in the 21st century global economy.” Councilman Valenzuela said. “These classes teach skills that are good for our kids today and good for our economy tomorrow.”

The classes are offered through the Phoenix Public Library and Parks and Recreation Department. Parents have two ways to get kids involved. There are free, drop-in classes each Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at Palo Verde Library, 4402 N. 51st Ave. The classes meet each Thursday through July 28 for youth ages 8 through 12.

The Parks Department is offering computer coding classes to participants in several of its full-day summer recreation programs, listed below, giving parents an additional opportunity to expose kids to computer science and coding.

• Holiday Park Recreation Center, 4560 N. 67th Ave. (Drop-In)
• Mark Atkinson Recreation Center, 4535 N. 23rd Ave. (Drop-In)

All kids attending these centers’ summer programs have the option of attending the coding class at Palo Verde Library for several hours each week. Parents interested in these centers’ summer programs can find information online at: phoenix.gov/parks.

Students in the computer coding class will work at their own pace from an online lesson plan. Staff will assist students, encourage them to work together to solve problems and keep students focused and on task.
