The Copa America Centenario 2016 has become a tournament you can’t miss anymore; it has the drama, the unexpected and the storylines that go along with the passion that soccer has to offer.
The following is a recap of what has transpired over the last few days going into the quarterfinals:
Peru has become the Cinderella of the Copa America Centenario
Peru accomplished something unthinkable Sunday night; the Peruvian National Team not only beat the
powerful Brazilian team, but it eliminated them from the tournament.
Peru shocked the soccer world by beating Brazil 1-0 on Raul Ruidiaz’s goal at the 75th minute of play.
Brazil had not missed the quarterfinals of the Copa since 1993.
Brazil was embarrassed in the last World Cup and it was embarrassed at the Copa America Centenario.
Does Peru have enough in the tank to make it to the finals? That is the question!
USA into the quarterfinals
U.S.A.’s Clint Dempsey has become the face of the national team; Dempsey scored the winning goal (1-0) against Paraguay on Saturday and sending the United States to the quarterfinals for the second time in four opportunities.
The U.S. played with 10 men the last 42 minutes of play and still dominated.
The United States finished first in its group with 6 points; Colombia will join them in the quarterfinals.
Argentina is dominating la Copa
Argentina, well, Argentina is playing like Argentina; the team advanced to the quarterfinals after beating up Panama 5-0 over the weekend.
Lionel Messi did not play the first game of the tournament, but entered the second game and scored three goals before time ran out.
Argentina is the clear favorite to win it all. If I were a betting man, who I am not, I would bet the $10 dollars in my bank account for the Albiceleste.
Venezuela plays its heart out and denies Mexico a victory
Venezuela was a real threat to Mexico and it will be a real threat for whomever they face during the remaining of the Copa America Centenario.
El Tri entered as the favorite Monday night against el Vinotinto, but Venezuela played its heart out and denied Mexico the victory.
Mexico was 15 minutes away from losing to Venezuela.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Jesus Corona scored the equalizer at the 80th minute of play for Mexico, while Jose Manuel Velazquez scored at the 10th minute of play for Venezuela.
The game was played at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX where Mexico played to a home crowd.
Mexico finished first in its group.
The Copa America Centenario has turned into a fun tournament to watch… Let’s keep it going!
