Ballet Arizona Presents Today’s Masters, March 24th – 27th
(Phoenix, AZ) — Just in time for Spring, Ballet Arizona presents a program of fresh, contemporary and classic works from choreographers around the world.. Today’s Masters puts today’s acclaimed choreographers in the spotlight for a program of creative and diverse works appealing to a range of interests. This year’s program features choreography from Ballet Arizona’s renowned Artistic Director Ib Andersen, Resident Choreographer at Hubbard Street Dance in Chicago, Alejandro Cerrudo, and Ballet Arizona dancer Nayon Iovino who was recently named Best Up-and-Coming Choreographer by AZCentral for his work at last year’s production of Today’s Masters. Rounding out these contemporary works is a classic ballet from August Bournonville, who heavily influenced the style of the Royal Danish Ballet.
Today’s Masters will run from March 24th to 27th for a total of five performances, with afternoon and evening shows at the Orpheum Theatrein Downtown Phoenix.
Second to Last (excerpt) and Pacopepepluto features choreography by Alejandro Cerrudo. Cerrudo has become a wildly popular choreographer known for his contemporary ballet works. Second to Last was created for Ballet Arizona in 2013 and received rave reviews.
Inner Layer will be presented by Nayon Iovino. The dance explores the stifling effects of conformity and joy of free expression. The production is the first work Iovino created for Ballet Arizona in 2014.
As the dance company’s artistic director, Andersen always aims to raise the bar with the demanding. Symphonie Classique (excerpt). This performance features intricate, high energy choreography, inspired by a French school of dancing that showcases costumes by Tony Award-Winning designer Martin Pakledinaz.
Lastly, audiences can enjoy Konservatoriet. This production is a classic of the master, August Bournonville who helped shape the repertory for the Royal Danish Ballet where Ib was the youngest principal dancer.
