Arizona Leafy Greens is Devoted to a Community that Eats ‘Healthier and Safe’
Nowadays, more and more people think about switching to a healthier lifestyle. Along with that comes of course, a healthier diet.
But how often do we really think whether or not what we’re eating is safe?
Lucky for us, there is an organization that takes pride in ensuring that only the best of the best is reaching consumer’s tables. What’s even better is the fact that the organization is based out of Arizona.
Arizona Leafy Greens is a non-profit organization based out of Yuma, Arizona, which has developed a program to ensure that all lettuce and leafy greens are safe to eat. They do so by developing, implementing and continuously enhancing a science-based leafy greens food safety program that now serves as a model for the agriculture industry nationwide.
Their Food Safety Training Kit (FSTK) was born out of a need to educate workers at the field level, and encourage the industry to adopt uniform food safety handling practices. Since its inception, it has evolved into a completely engaging program that can be delivered in the field, in a classroom or via video. All materials are produced in both English and Spanish.
During the months of November through March, 90 percent of the leafy greens consumed in the United States and Canada comes from Arizona.
In addition:
- Lettuce is Arizona’s top crop, representing 20 percent of the state’s total crop production
- Yuma, Arizona is the winter lettuce capital of the world
- The Arizona Leafy Greens industry employs an estimated 20,000 workers
