Luis Hernandez says he has been overweight since birth, joking, “I came out fat.”

Working as a teacher in Chicago, Illinois, Luis is now on the path to a healthier lifestyle after being part of NBC’s hit series, “The Biggest Loser.”

As all fans of the series already know, the first weeks in the ranch aren’t easy; but Hernandez was able to push through and lose more than 20 pounds in the first week. Helping along the way was his twin brother Roberto.

“I wanted to prove myself [in the first weeks], he said, “It was rough, it wasn’t easy, but at the same time we were able to shake it off and move forward.”

Luis says his two boys were his biggest motivation for being on the show. “I wanted a better life … I want to be around for them when I get older.”

Even though Luis has now been eliminated from the competition, he describes his experience as a blessing.

“[I’ve learned that] eating healthy is very important,” he said, “eating healthy and exercising. One has to go with the other, and taking that [lesson with me] off the ranch and bringing it on to the real world has been very impactful and will continue to be for the rest of my life.”

Being the only Latinos in the competition, Luis says he expects his brother to continue to represent “la raza” as the series moves forward.

“We took pride there, we took pride that we were Latinos in the competition,” he said, “we made taquitos once and everybody loved them. We took our sazón and we ran with it you know.”

Now, Luis continues to root for his brother; not only to stand behind the family name, but the Latino community overall.

“I’m hoping big things for him,” he said, “he can’t depend on the motivation that I provided anymore, he on his own now and he has to keep going forward. [Asi que] hechale ganas hermano, tu puedes!”

Luis says he’s immensely appreciative of “The Biggest Loser” and their staff for the opportunity and their hospitality along the way.

“They’ve been nothing but courteous to me and awesome. They themselves pushed me to become a better person in the physical aspect and provided everything I needed to succeed.”

If you want to continue to follow Luis Hernandez’ twin brother, Roberto Hernandez’s weight loss journey, don’t forget to tune in every Monday to NBC and catch “The Biggest Loser.”
