Mexico Beats El Salvador with Ease 3-0; Now on to the Next Game
By Francisco Romero
Juan Carlos Osorio obtained his first victory as Mexico’s new head coach by beating El Salvador 3-0 in the first qualifying game en route to Russia 2018 World Cup.
Friday’s night victory was Mexico’s 13th straight win.
Osorio celebrated for less than 12 hours as he had his squad working out Saturday morning in preparation for their next match against Honduras.
The starters from Friday night worked out for about an hour Saturday morning, while the rest of the team worked out longer.
Andres Guardado and Hector Herrera scored for Mexico during the first half of Friday’s game, while Carlos Vela scored the third goal in the second half.
Although pleased with the outcome, Osorio feels that the team could have played better, “When you have total control of the game, no matter who you are playing, we could say that we had a great game, even though we scored enough goals, we still left a lot of opportunities on the field, we played consistently, but we were not as effective as we wanted to,” said Osorio after the game.
As of Saturday morning Osorio had not mentioned any changes to his starting lineup or style of play, but he is certainly getting ready to face Honduras on Tuesday, “As of today our position is pretty much the same,” he said. “We have to look at what Honduras has done, the changes they have made and we have to be ready for that. We have to analyze their structure and their defense and also look at how are players are doing.”
Mexico and Honduras will face each other Tuesday in Honduras at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.
On Friday the United States Men’s National Team beat Saint Vincent and the Grenadines by a score of 6-1.
The USMNT will play Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.
