Savory and unforgettable, that’s El Güero Canelo. From the outside in, the patriotic colored building is filled with long lines and hungry bellies, with customers waiting patiently on the side as their orders are called.  To the right is the mini factory where the bread is prepared and baked. There’s no doubt new location has many locals talking.

Many are familiar with the owner of the restaurant. He is the man who brought the savory Sonoran Hot Dog to Phoenix. Daniel Contreras, also known as the “King of Sonoran Dogs”, is an ambitious man who always had a passion for delicious food.

“It all started with my mouth. I wanted something very tasty,” said Contreras.

The tastiness of the Sonoran Hots Dogs are lies in what is stuffed on top: bacon, beans, cooked onions, fresh tomatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, jalapeños… these are just the basic toppings for this tasty dog.

The buzzing eatery is located in South Phoenix and has been given a warm welcome by all curious foodies and those who crave their hometown food.

“I go by feelings. My wife and I had a good feeling about this location and we didn’t know it was the heart of Phoenix,” he explained. “There are a lot of hotels around us and hardworking people. So, we are in the right spot.”

While there are a variety of Sonoran Hot Dog stands in the Valley, there is nothing close to the ones found here. What makes these dogs delicious on every bite? It all lies in the bread.

Everything is literally made in house. From the tortillas to the buns, customers who walk in can see their breads being made through the glass walls.

There are a few more things to try while dining at this spicy location. Experience authentic Mexican drinks served in an old fashioned bottle such as in Pepsi and Fanta (Mexican style).

Some other dishes to try include the carne asada tacos and burros; and both are just as delicious as the famous hot dogs.

Whether you come to see what the hype is about, or just had to return for one more helping, there is one thing every patron has in common: the love for delicious Mexican culture.
