Tiger Woods had surgery last week and will use the rest of 2015 for rehabilitation.
“Tiger Woods underwent a micro discectomy late on Sept. 16 at Park City Medical Center,” said neurosurgeon Dr. Charles Rich, who performed the initial operation. “With the upcoming offseason, the decision was made to remove a small disc fragment that was pinching his nerve. The microsurgery was a complete success, and he was discharged Thursday night.”
Woods was scheduled to compete in the Frys.com Open and the Bridgestone America’s Golf Cup in Mexico City along with the Hero World Challenge at Albany in the Bahamas and will miss all three events.
“I’d like to send my regrets to Fry’s and all those associated with the America’s Golf Cup,” Woods said. “Those were two events I was really looking forward to playing. I was ready to start the 2015-16 PGA TOUR season at Fry’s, and I was excited to join my good friend Matt [Kuchar] in Mexico City.
The team of Woods and Matt Kuchar was already confirmed to participate; the event will take place at Club Campestre in Mexico City.
Carlos Ortiz and Rodolfo Cazaubón will represent Mexico.
America’s Golf Cup will take place October 22-25 of this year.
“This is certainly disappointing, but I’m a fighter,” Woods said through his official website. “I’ve been told I can make a full recovery, and I have no doubt that I will.”
Lisandro Borges, CEO of Bridgestone America’s Golf Cup presented by Value was excited to have signed Tigers Woods to play in Mexico City; this is what he said last month when Woods confirmed his presence, “Undoubtedly, signing a contract with Tiger Woods gave a new dimension to this cup. Being with him was a great joy and pride. I was surprised at his warmth and open attitude,” said Borges.
Woods is a 14-time major champion.
