We all know the rule: “no wearing white after Labor Day.” But let’s face it, it’s 2015 and that’s pretty much a thing of the past. It’s hard to find someone who still follows the rule up to this day.

If you take a closer look, white will show up more than once on fall and winter runways. One thing’s for certain — making the color not appear like you’re going to the beach is tricky. That’s why we’ve come up with five ways you can use white after Labor Day, and not look like you’re stuck in the summer.

With a Pop of Color: In this case, going for one color as the spotlight is key. Remember that combining more than two colors can look very spring or summer, so keeping your entire outfit neutral with one pop of color will keep it season-appropriate.

With Plaid: Plaid is everything in the fall. Here, the key is making a statement with the pattern and using the white to draw even more attention to it. Here, we see plaid pants being paired with a white top — but it totally works the other way around. Try a button-down plaid shirt with white jeans and knee-high boots!

With Denim: Denim plus white equals classic and timeless — so don’t be afraid to pair those up this fall! Go for a denim jacket (like the one pictured below), paired with a white top and a bold pattern. Jacket vests were everywhere this summer, so it only makes sense denim blazers will prevail this fall.

White Blazer/Coat: White blazers or coats for the winter are a must — don’t be afraid to try something new! This is one of the reasons why “no white after Labor Day” shouldn’t exist, it’s the best color to wear in the wintertime. If we can’t get snow in Arizona, at least we should have the color to rock. A white blazer will go a long way; whether you want to use it for a weekend look or a job interview.

White, Long Skirt: Maxi skirts were all over during the summer. They’re so easy to wear, so it’s perfect that they’re also “in” during the cooler months. Paired with a rolled up sweater, a scarf, and a messy bun? Super adorable!
