Obama plans major push for Immigration Reform
The Obama administration will campaign for a comprehensive bill that could include a citizenship path for 11 million people living illegally in the US as soon as the confrontation over fiscal policy winds down.
According to official sources, key tactical decisions are still being made, and President Obama will campaign for a bill that would also bolster border security measures and penalties for employers who hire undocumented workers.
A comprehensive bill wouldn’t need too many Republicans to pass. For advocates of immigration reform, the post-election message was clear: they turned out on Election Day, helped deliver a new term, and now it’s the President’s turn to step up.
Two years ago a bipartisan bill died before even reaching the floor of the Senate. Something proponents of a new reform hope to avoid this time around.”The president can’t guarantee us the outcome but he can guarantee us the fight, we expect a strong fight” Eliseo Medina, secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union, told the Los Angeles Times.
