Phoenix nonprofits receive nearly half-million dollars in grant funding from Cox Charities

PHOENIX — Cox Charities has announced its selection of 90 non-profit organizations to receive grant funding, including the Fallen Firefighters Memorial and the CO+Hoots Foundation in Phoenix. In the Phoenix-area, $463,500 was awarded to 66 non-profits.

Since the program’s inception in 1996, Cox Charities has awarded more than $5 million to local Arizona nonprofits that support youth and education.

“Cox is committed to youth education and building our next generation of community leaders in the areas that we do business and where our employees live,” said John Wolfe, incoming Cox Senior Vice President and Southwest Region Manager. 

Arizona Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial

After tragedies such as last year’s Yarnell Hill Fire, the Arizona community pulled together to provide extra support for the families of the fallen firefighters. One of the initiatives that was formed to give support to families is the Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial which works to provide tuition waivers to family members to any Arizona public community college or university.

The Cox Charities grant of $15,000 will fund the building of a statewide memorial, to ensure that our fallen heroes will never be forgotten. 

“The Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial will ensure that our fallen heroes will be remembered for years to come and will provide comfort to the spouses and children who’ve lost loved ones,” said Steve Beuerlein, President of the United Phoenix Firefighters Association. “We appreciate Cox’s support and commitment to helping us complete this important project.”

CO+Hoots Foundations

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer-related employment will rise by 22 percent by 2020, with the strongest demand being for software developers. Currently, only one in 10 U.S. schools teaches children to code.

The Cox Charities grant donation of $7,500 will help The CO+Hoots Foundation launch the Phoenix Coding Club,  a program that will provide downtown elementary through high school students with the opportunity to learn to code from local coding experts.

“Cox has been a long-time supporter of CO+HOOTS and we are very grateful to have their support on our Tap Talent Early impact area initiative and specifically our Coding programs for youth,” said Kristin Romaine, CO+Hoots co-founder and executive director. “Cox shares our commitment to the local tech community and building a strong future for Arizona.” 

Funds raised for Cox Charities grant funding comes from multiple sources including: donations from Cox customers, employees and corporate partners and fundraising partnerships with other events in the community, such as the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction, Celebrity Fight Night, Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, Christmas at the Scottsdale Fairmont Princess and more.

This year, more than 75% of Cox Arizona’s employee base have personally contributed to the foundation through donations.
