Sometimes Halloween will bring out the kid in you – it will remind you of the joys of playing dress up.

But in the midst of trying to achieve your best costume, you might take your hair and makeup to the next level – and have a major beauty malfunction.

We have compiled a list of some of the top costume mishaps you should by all means avoid this Halloween.

Don’t let it happen to you!

1. Put down the poster paint – Say you’re dressing up as a skeleton or going for the Day of the Dead Calavera look. That’s great! But, we recommend sticking to real body makeup. Not only will your arts and crafts paint leave your skin extra dry, but it can also tug on your hairline, which will hurt once you try to remove it.

2. Careful with the tooth wax – Witches, pirates and even zombie costumes will make you want to get tooth wax to pull off the tooth-less raggedy look. But beware. You don’t want to forget that you are actually wearing tooth wax in your mouth and accidentally swallow it while munching on your Halloween treats.

3. Do NOT use mascara as hair dye – A common tip for costumes is to use mascara to darken eyebrows, mustaches or beards. And to our surprise it does work. So well, in fact, that it’ll leave you with stains for the next two days. We recommend instead purchasing temporary beard dye, which also works on eyebrows, and will wash out easily with shampoo. Another myth is to use shoe polish to darken hair – which is another hack we advice you to avoid.

4. Krazy Glue is NOT for your face – Looking around online, some people think that using Krazy Glue is a good costume tip to apply mustaches, wigs, ears, and bald caps. This is a horrible idea. Not only can it burn your skin, but removing it could take hours. Costume stores and professional makeup shops sell adhesive that is safe to use on your skin and can be dissolved with a special remover.

5. Use spray-on hair dye outdoors – These are pretty common on Halloween. You want green, blue, pink, or red hair and you go the quick, easy, non-permanent way and use a spray-on hair dye. But remember that this is literally spray on paint, so unless you want your walls to be multi-color, make sure to take it outdoors.

6. Tease at your own risk – Sometimes our hair makes the statement in a costume. If you want to take your cat costume to the next level with a lioness head of head – careful with the teasing! You don’t want to spend hours painfully brushing it out. If you’re going to tease your hair, make sure not to tease the entire length, just the hair closest to your roots, and tease section by section, meaning start at the underlayers and work your way to the top. That way, you get lots of volume with half the back-combing.
