The Major League Baseball League Championship Series will start Friday; the Baltimore Orioles will host the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).

The Royals swept the Los Angeles Angels for the right to advance to the ALCS. Kansas City swept a playoff series for the second time, joining the 1980 ALCS vs. New York.

The Orioles also swept their way into the ALCS beating the potent Detroit Tigers three straight games. It is the first time Baltimore advances this far since 1997.

In something rarely seen in baseball, the Tigers sent to the mound the last three American League Cy Young Award winners and none of them was able to come up with a victory (Max Scherzer 2013, David Price 2012 and Justin Verlander 2011).

Both divisional series in the National League went to four games. In a rematch of the 2012 National League Championship Series (NLCS) the San Francisco Giants will face the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Wild Card Giants eliminated the Washington Nationals 3-1 in the best of five. The Giants had to beat the Pittsburgh pirates in the Wildcard game to gain the right to face the Nationals.

The Cardinals advanced to their fourth consecutive National League Championship Series by sending the Los Angeles Dodgers home. The Cardinals beat Clayton Kershaw for the second time in four days Wednesday; Kershaw is the favorite to win the National League Cy Young award.
